Public Works Minister Robeson Benn spearheaded a team of officers from the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) programme during the distribution of 180 net books in Region 10 last week Thursday. The distribution process commenced at the SOM Skills Training Centre at Watooka Linden, where some 30 families happily received their computers.

Presently, at the five hubs situated at Amelia’s Ward, Central Mackenzie, Watooka, Silvercity and at Wisroc, recipients are in the process of mobilising themselves into groups to begin their 20 hour community project. Recipients, if equipped with requisite skills and knowledge in information technology, can offer their services while those that lack these elements are required to execute community projects such as the rehabilitation of basketball courts or play fields. McKlmon reported that recipients across Region 10 and in other parts of Guyana have been responding positively towards the project. This claim was confirmed when Guyana Times sought the views of several of the beneficiaries. “I am grateful for this laptop because this opportunity will definitely al low and assist my son with his school work. It is a very good thing that the government is doing,” said Ann Declou, who travelled from Coomacka to the SOM Skills Training Centre at Watooka to uplift her computer.
